My wife got caught off guard by a gust of wind while opening the drivers side door of our 2004 Envoy today. It swung open hard enough that the bracket that mounts to the body pulled away about 1/32". The front of the door now rubs on the edge of the quarter panel when opening. Any idea what I’m in for here repair wise?

$300-$600 probably. Depending on where you go.

Well, let’s see. On my 2010 Ford E-Series, it cost me $1200 when a gust of wind knocked the door so far forward that I had to crowbar it open. We ended up having to completely replace the drivers’ side door.

Given it’s a 12 year old vehicle, if you’re kinda handy I’ll share an old bodyshop trick: pinch an impact socket between the door side of the hinge and the hinge post, and slowly close the door. The socket jams the hinge and causes it to effect the reverse energy on the post, twisting the front of the hinge back out, the rear of the hinge back towards the post, and effectively moving the door rearwards away from the fender. Go gently at first, don’t torque the hell out of it right at the start, but you may be able to save yourself a bit of money.

About $500.
....for a LeMons-worthy vehicle anyway.
